Airport fee changes at YLW

Parking fees at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) are scheduled to change on April 1, 2014.

Kelowna City Council approved an increase to certain airport fees at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) during Monday’s Regular Council Meeting.

Effective April 1, 2014 vehicle parking rates will be as follows:

  • Short Term Lot                                               $18.50 per 24 hours
  • Gold Pass (six month)Parking Program                $900
  • Long Term Lot                                                $12 per day/$62 per week

All hourly and meter rates will remain unchanged. GST is embedded in the airport’s parking fees for ease of cash payment.

Other items that will see an increase effective April 1 include Airport Landing Fees (3.5%) and Terminal Fees (2%). In addition, effective Feb. 15 there will be an increase to Fuel Truck Licence fees and the aviation gasoline concession fee.

The airport recently completed a full business review focused on expenditure reduction and revenue enhancement. “Our focus is to remain a low cost airport while still expanding passenger and airline services,” says Airport Finance and Administration Manager Noreen Redman. “When you compare YLW to other similar sized airports in Canada we are still listed as one of least expensive airports to fly from.”

Redman notes that switching to a new service provider and upgrading to new web-based technology for the Flight Information Display system and common use terminal equipment and self serve kiosks has generated significant savings. In addition, the airport negotiated a new master building and technical services contract that reduced expected expenditures and absorbed some services that were previously provided by airport security. The airport has also worked with its concessionaires to enhance product availability and increase sales.

Despite these measures, the budgetary pressures facing the airport including increased costs of fuel and utilities; maintenance of additional square footage; elimination of federal funding for airport policing; and reduced overall landing fees resulting from the increase in Q400 aircraft serving YLW make raising fees a necessity.

YLW’s fees and charges have been presented to its stakeholders, including the airlines, and remain among the lowest in its Canadian airport comparator group including Victoria, Prince George, Regina, Saskatoon, St. John’s, and Halifax.
